Why Does Snail Mail Matter?

Hello,

I thought I might write a bit about why snail mail still matters and is well worth the effort of sending in our digital world. Messages can be typed, sent, and read in mere seconds. Snail mail is about connection, care, and presence.

Writing takes time, effort, and causes the writer to slow down for a few minutes during their day. The letter writer/sender take more time to choose their words, shows their personality more in a letter, and overall takes more effort to achieve than just typing a text message, email, etc. The stamp(s), paper, and envelopes can carry meaning too. You have taken time to pause during your busy day or have dedicated time to think of someone else by taking the time writing a short message or a longer letter. The paper, envelope, and stamp chosen also tailors a message to the recipient. Maybe the paper, etc. goes with what the recipient likes or maybe its a reflection of what you like and reminds the recipient about you as well. All the imperfections in a letter may range from a crinkled paper, smudged ink, or maybe a crossed-out word that shows a human connection instead of a perfectly printed off letter that is more computer perfect. Enjoy the perfectly imperfect letter, card, etc. sent to you through snail mail.

Paper is easier to have ready keepsakes compared to a text message. Having a collection of snail mail is a form of not only the present and future memories, but later on for the past as well. Letters, cards, postcards, give a bit of comfort from seeing a paper meant for you in familiar handwriting. I personally love the feel of different papers, the smell of the paper, folded paper, seeing the different ink colors used, and even when a pencil is used to write the message. It's absolutely a lovely experience to have snail mail in your hands meant for yourself. It's not noisy with a notification, its a subtle whispering of here is a lovely message for the recipient. At the end of the day, receiving snail mail is a great time late at night for me to be in a cozy place of my home to relax, enjoy a cup of tea, and read a letter sent as snail mail. Your handwritten words may be just what someone else needs. Seeing and reading what has been written for the recipient might bright their day after a difficult day or at least it might cause them to smile.

Pause to write a letter, card, or postcard today, because you never know you might make someone's day better with a simple, old traditional gesture of snail mail.

Wishing you cherished moments, memories, and writing.

                                                             Warmly,

                                                                       Sally
